Winter And Your Septic System

Winter in Southern Ontario hasn’t disappointed but if your property has a septic tank, there’s some things you should be aware of. Hopefully you have prepared your system to get you through the winter months.

If you haven’t yet, talk to the professionals at Dan Parr’s Sewer Services to ensure your system is prepared for winter. Here is what should have been done or should be if it’s not too late:

• Insulate your septic tank and system

• In planting season, consider planting vegetation to protect your system from the cold

• Run water and use the tank daily

• Keep pipes leak and clog free so that the line and drainage will work properly

• Before the ground is frozen, aerate the soil around the septic system

During the winter months, you should know the following to keep your system running well:

• Avoid driving over the tank and drain field

• Remove snow that that built up over the system

Keep in mind that when the ground freezes or there’s a lot of snow, it’s harder to reach the tank and the system. The pumping and maintenance will be more difficult to tackle. The snow that has become compacted over the system is not insulation and may cause the pipes to become frozen. Snow that has compacted may also cause pressure over the tank and piping causing damage. Planning a fall maintenance with Dan Parr’s Sewer Services would have helped you avoid any issues in the winter. If you have a problem, you will get help from the pros at Dan Parr because they are emergency ready. You can count on them to come to your rescue. Don’t forget to use your water efficiently and perhaps have a water usage conversation with all members of the household. Also keep the taps and toilets well maintained. This means leak-free. The more water a household conserves, the less water enters the septic system which will really help in the winter. Using water efficiently will improve the way your septic system operates and should reduce the risk of something going wrong. Discussions with household members should revolve around the use of toilet waste. A toilet is not a garbage can. Never flush anything but human waste and toilet paper. Anything else will bring trouble to your door. If your toilet or a sink is clogged, don’t use chemicals. Hot water should shift what is causing the clog.

If you have a septic system, you can’t go wrong with hiring professionals to assist you in the maintenance and repair of your septic system. The folks at Dan Parr will be glad to help you with all of your septic system needs.
