Winter Maintenance

Homeowners that have a septic system often have thoughts about their septic system during the winter. However, if you had a pump out done in the fall, you should be good to go all winter. Be aware of how much water is flushed into the tank during the winter but if you took the appropriate steps to winterize your system, you can have a pump out done if necessary. The rule of thumb is to have the tank pumped out when it reaches three-quarters capacity. You don’t want to have the contents freeze because that could cause the tank to crack. If the septic tank won’t be used during the winter, like at a cottage, make sure you have had a pump out done late fall. If you have concerns, call the professionals at Dan Parr regarding your septic system.

If snow is going to cleared at the site of the septic tank be careful. Try and leave snow on top of the septic tank because acts as insulation. Hopefully you’ve marked the location of the tank so it can be easily found. That would really help to avoid snow removal mishaps and would be appreciated by anyone looking for it an emergency.

If your septic tank system is located at your cottage, try and take a trip to check on things. All you have to do is flush the toilets and gently open the taps to check that water is flowing as it should. Again, leave the snow where it is covering the septic tank. It’s insulation! If you have any problems, give the team at Dan Parr a call. They’re always ready to help.

Hopefully, you have prepared your septic system by taking the following steps in the fall:

1)     Pumped the septic tank.

2)     Had the system inspected and any issues were repaired.

3)     Insulated the tank with mulch or soil.

4)     Insulated the system’s pipes.

5)     If the system won’t be used in the winter, (cottage,) the pipes should be winterized.
